Greco Roman temple at Edfu built in the time of Ptolemy Vll (164-116 BC), Ptolemaic Dynasty, devoted to Horus, “God of the Sky”. One of the oldest gods of Egypt , his original form was that of a Falcon or Hawk. Later depictions of “Horus” were in human form with the head of a Falcon. The inscriptions on the twelve inner columns are devoted to the great divinities of all Egypt . The King presents them with their favorite offerings, and as representative of the whole country, welcomes them to the Temple of Edfu . The rays of the sun shine into the great hall over the panels of the façade, bathing part of the columns inscriptions in bright light. |
